Gerald D. Muto, CPA

Graduate--University of Nevada, Reno with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.

Licensed California Certified Public Accountant since 1974.

Employed by Price Waterhouse & Company, a Big Six international accounting firm, in their Sacramento office.

Employed in private industry as a corporate controller and financial manager.

The practical, hands-on experience in private industry coupled with the public accounting experience result in a depth of understanding of complex issues.

I have held a variety of volunteer director positions with churches, schools and other charitable organizations to lend financial expertise to their business practices from the preparation and implementation of business plans to budgets.  Through these various associations and through employment in industry, an appreciation for the implementation phase of plans has been obtained.

My current range of clients runs from small (less than $5,000 annual income) to mid-size ($24 million in annual income).  Clients vary from professional practices (medicine, law, veterinary, etc.) to manufacturing, from wholesale to retail, food service industry, aircraft fractional ownership programs, construction contractors and real estate developers, etc. Work involving compliance audits and tax returns for government funded low-income housing projects (HUD and Farmers Home Administration) was a mainstay of my practice for many years until the Tax Reform Act of 1986 reduced the tax incentives for investors in these types of projects.

Continuing education to keep abreast in the field and new developments is required (80 hours bi-annually) as a part of licensure and, from a practical standpoint, necessary for competence.  In order to enhance my existing skills and to fulfill continuing education requirements, I attended law school for one and one-half years (1991-1992).  I also attend tax update seminars applicable to my practice.

I served as Technical Review Panel Coordinator for the State Board of Accountancy.  This work was related to the investigation of claims against C.P.A.'s or other Board licensees related to matters governed by the rules and regulations of the accounting profession in California.

I have been a speaker for the California Association of Collectors and the Sacramento Chapter of Fraud Examiners on the topic of embezzlement.  In addition, I am a published author of various articles on accounting matters for the Collectors INK, a trade publication.
